AgriLife Extension to offer statewide cow herd rebuilding programs in April and May

Apr 3 - May 4, 2012

Past Event:

The Texas AgriLife Extension Service is beginning a statewide educational effort in April and May that focuses on rebuilding the state’s cattle herds. The meetings are scheduled for Midland, April 3; Graham, April 17; Abilene and Athens, April 24; Bastrop, May 3; and San Antonio, May 4.

“For the past two decades, we have seen a continual decline in cattle numbers within the state,” said Dr. Ron Gill, AgriLife Extension livestock specialist and associate department head for animal science at Texas A&M University in College Station.

“The historic drought of 2011 dramatically accentuated that trend. The state’s cattle industry and affiliated trade and service companies are the second-largest economic driver to the state economy. With the cow herd at such a critically low level, Texas will start to lose infrastructure if cow numbers do not increase soon.”

For meeting particulars or to register online, go to: http://agriliferegister.tamu.edu(keyword: beef). Or register by phone for the Midland meeting at 432-686-4700 and for the Abilene meeting at 325-672-6048.

Program topics will include changes in lending policies that will impact availability of capital to reinvest in cattle; balancing forage recovery with cattle inventory recovery; evaluating options for securing replacement females; and developing a logical and systematic system to evaluate the worth of available replacement females.

Discussions on herd health, biosecurity and creating strategic inventory flexibility into an operation will also be included.

Gill said the need for environmental adaptability of cows used to rebuild the cow herd will also be a key topic.
