Growers who intend to plant the new Clearfield rice varieties next spring must attend a Grower Certification Seminar this winter, officials of the companies introducing the new technology have announced.

Rice producers will have a choice of three Clearfield varieties in 2002 — CL 121, CL 141 and CL 161 — according to spokesmen for Orygen Seed Marketing and BASF, which are jointly responsible for the release of the herbicide-resistant rice system.

To help educate growers about the need for proper stewardship of the new varieties, the companies have scheduled the Grower Certification Seminars in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Texas beginning in January. Three seminars have already been held in Louisiana.

In Texas, a Clearfied Certification Seminar is scheduled at the El Campo Civic Center in El Campo, beginning at 10 a.m., Jan. 23.
