The 28th Annual Southern Conservation Systems Conference is scheduled in Amarillo, June 26-28, 2006, at the Fifth Seasons Inn. This year’s program theme is “Improving conservation technologies to compete for global resources and markets” and will feature a producer panel discussion of conservation systems used on dryland and irrigated farms with some integrated livestock grazing.
Over 20 presentations and 40 poster reports will describe research that integrates livestock into forage, grain, and fiber cropping systems or implements sensor and tillage technology to increase the efficiency of water, ag-chemicals, and energy use.
On Wednesday, June 28, a half-day field tour will highlight local concentrated feeding operations, commercial farms using conservation tillage, and research sites for developing and quantifying efficient irrigation practices, wind energy generation and residue management systems.
Participants can receive credit for continuing education units (CEUs) toward their Texas Department of Agriculture pesticide applicator license and Texas Certified Crop Advisors.
Conference registration includes lunch on Tuesday and Wednesday, refreshments during breaks, conference abstracts and proceedings, and the tour. Regular registration is $120 and student registration is $50.
The SCSC conference is primarily for exchanging information on conservation systems among researchers, extension and Natural Resources Conservation Service personnel, crop consultants, ag-chemical companies, and farmers.
The main objective of the SCSC is to expand the use of conservation practices in the southern United States to reduce soil erosion, environmental degradation, and resource utilization.
To achieve this goal, much of the conservation systems research is directed at developing technologies that increase farm yields and/or profitability while improving the quality of soil and water resources for agricultural, domestic, and recreational uses.
The program is being presented by the Southern Extension and Research Activity – Information Exchange Group 20 (SERA-IEG-20), USDA-Agricultural Research Service Conservation and Production Research Lab., Bushland TX., USDA-NRCS and the Golden Spread Chapter—Soil and Water Conservation Society.
