Wheat production, profitability will highlight Wheat Field Day on May 15

Wheat producers from throughout Texas and Oklahoma will have a chance to hear other producers talk about their fertilization successes at the Wheat Field Day on May 15 at the AgriPro Wheat Breeding Facility in Lockett, just south of Vernon.

The annual wheat field day will begin with registration at 8:30 a.m., said Langdon Reagan, Texas AgriLife Extension Service agent for Wilbarger County.

“I just think this year’s program is going to be real beneficial,” Reagan said. “It is an interesting time. For once we are going to have a (good) price for wheat. But fertilizer, diesel and all our inputs are higher.”

Producers will hear Dr. Bill Raun, soil science and precision agriculture professor from Oklahoma State University, talk about evaluating nutrient needs and GreenSeeker Technology, a system that utilizes optical sensors for precision fertilizer applications.

Additionally, Reagan said they will have Dr. Gaylon Morgan, AgriLife Extension small grains specialist, discuss the economic impact of rust.

“Last year we (the Rolling Plains) got hit with diseases really hard, so these guys are wondering how much that affected their yields last year,” he said. Dr. Todd Baughman, AgriLife Extension agronomist, and Rob Borchardt of AgriPro will view wheat and triticale variety trials with producers.

Field representatives from Syngenta Crop Protection, DuPont and Estes Chemical will talk about maximizing crop profitability.

The highlight of the day will be the producers’ panel that will discuss top-dressing wheat with anhydrous ammonia, Reagan said.

Three continuing education units will be offered.
