The annual field tour showcases the Intensive Management Precision Agriculture Conservation Tillage Center at the Texas A&M University Farm off F.M. 50 in Burleson County. The center features 172 acres of irrigated crops planted in a circle. These crops are irrigated by a center-pivot irrigation system that moves in a windshield wiper-like pattern.

The crop land is also used for collecting geographic information system (GIS) and other data related to precision agricultural production.

The event is free. Three certified crop advisor (CCA) and pesticide certification units will be offered to participants. Registration begins at 3 p.m. at the farm headquarters building on F.M. 60. The tour will start at 3:30 p.m.

The first stop will be a tour of watermelon production at the Joe Wilder farm. Some 300 to 500 acres of watermelons will be showcased. Paul Wiggins of Wiggins Farms and Dr. Frank Dainello, Extension horticulturist and vegetable specialist, will lead the tour.

The second stop will showcase conservation tillage practices, including a cotton-by-corn-tillage study led by Frank Hons, soil fertility specialist with the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station.

It will be followed by a sorghum population stop, with discussions on varieties and planting methods led by Tom Gerik, Experiment Station crop physiologist.

The fourth stop will feature Robert Lemon, Texas Cooperative Extension state cotton specialist, discussing new stacked gene cotton varieties and plant growth regulator management.

The final stop will be led by Paul Baumann, Extension weed specialist. He will discuss the latest information regarding weed control, Roundup Ready corn, perennial weed control and atrazine work. A fajita dinner will follow at 6:15 p.m.
