Beef Cattle and Forage Crops Field Day scheduled for May 1 near Mound Valley

Kansas State University´s Southeast Agricultural Research Center has scheduled a Beef Cattle and Forage Crops Field Day for Thursday, May 1.

Registration for the event begins at 8:30 a.m. at the center´s Mound Valley Unit 2-1/2 miles west of Mound Valley, Kan., on U.S. Highway 160 (formerly K-96), then 1/4 mile south on Elk Road. The program begins at 9 a.m.

About 20 agriculture-related companies will have displays available and will sponsor a complimentary lunch.

Presentations by K-State Research and Extension specialists planned for the day include:

oCorn, Ethanol and Cattle: What´s Ahead in 2008? - James Mintert, agricultural economist;

oUsing Cow Body Condition Score to Determine Optimum Weaning Time -Karl Harboth, livestock specialist;

oSelection of Legumes for Interseeding into Fescue Pastures – Joe Moyer, forage agronomist;

oForage Response to Fertilization - Doug Shoup, crops and soils specialist;

oSupplementation of Grazing Stocker Cattle - Lyle Lomas, animal scientist and head of K-State´s Southeast Agricultural Research Center.
