Texas AgriLife Research and the plant and soil science department at Texas Tech University at Lubbock will conduct a safflower production field day beginning at 10 a.m. July 21 at Texas Tech’s research farm in Lubbock.

The farm is located in Lubbock at 2nd Street and Quaker.

“We think that winter and spring safflower has great potential as an oilseed crop for this region,” said Dr. Dick Auld, plant and soil scientist with AgriLife Research and Texas Tech University.

Oil is extracted from safflower seed and used mainly as a cooking oil and in margarine in much the same way as sunflower seeds, Auld said.

Auld said the field day will include comments by researchers, private seed companies, growers and processors. There will also be an opportunity for participants to visit commercial safflower production fields later in the day following the formal presentations.

The field day is free and open to the public.
