Agribusiness professionals can learn more about marketing products to Cuba at a conference scheduled for March 6 at the Texas Department of Agriculture in Austin.

“Exporting to Cuba” will help agribusiness, export service providers, producers and government officials better understand how to distribute goods to the Cuban export market, said Dr. Parr Rosson, Texas AgriLife Extension Service economist and director of the Center for North American Studies at Texas A&M University.

“Participants can expect to learn more about the marketing opportunities and the steps necessary to travel to Cuba and do business there, and what steps you have to go through getting your product licensed,” Rosson said.

“We’re also going to talk about potential markets and what they are looking for, and what a company can expect once they go into business.”

The Cuban market has been focused on such bulk commodities as wheat, soybeans and soybean meal, rice and corn, Rosson said.

Consumer-ready products, such as frozen or chilled broilers, have been important, he said.

“We’ve seen some pork move into the market, and we’ve seen a smattering of processed fruits and vegetables, bottled water and other products.”

Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples will give opening remarks at the conference.

Registration is $30 before Feb. 22 and $50 after. Sponsors are the Texas Department of Agriculture, Texas Cuba Trade Alliance and AgriLife Extension.
