Westphalia Hosts Water Conference

Brushy Creek, water issues and water legislation will be the topics of a conference at the Westphalia Community Center in Westphalia. The meeting will be held from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Aug. 23.

Sen. Kip Averitt (R-Waco) has been invited to talk about "Senate Bill 3: What It Means for Texas, Central Texas and Falls County."

The bill addresses the development, management and conservation of water resources in Texas, said MaryAnn Smith, program coordinator with the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station at the Blackland Research and Extension Center in Temple.

Other speakers and topics will include:

- Dr. Allan Jones, director, Texas Water Resources Institute, "The State of Texas Water: Are We Ready for the Next Drought?"

- Jason Fenton, Rep. John H. Carter's (R-Round Rock) office, "Growth of Texas: Population Increases and Increased Need for Water."

- Dr. Ron Kaiser, professor, Texas A&M University, "Economic Impact of Brushy Creek Reservoir."

- Mike Meyer, former Falls County judge, "Process and Decision-Making for Brushy Creek."

A question and answer session will be held after each speaker.

The forum is open to the public at no charge. Participants planning to stay for lunch should respond to Smith at 254-774-6034 before the day of the meeting.

Conference costs are being underwritten by Texas Water Resources Institute, Experiment Station, Blackland Research and Extension Center and Falls County Economic Cooperative.
