Pesticide, ag waste collection scheduled for December

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality in conjunction with the TDA and The Texas Cooperative Extension has planned six Agricultural Waste Pesticide Collection (AWPC) events for the weeks of Dec. 3 and Dec. 10. These collection events offer rural Texans the opportunity to dispose of banned or unwanted pesticides as well as other related agricultural items.

Collection is open to ALL Texas residents: Who apply pesticides or other agricultural chemicals for the production of agricultural products in Texas and who currently have banned or unwanted agricultural chemicals.

No wastes will be accepted from chemical dealers, school chemistry or biology labs, franchise pesticide applicators certified by the Texas Structural Pest Control Board.

Collection sites will accept herbicides, pesticides, oil, oil filters (limit two55-gallon drums per participant. Businesses that change oil for a fee do not qualify.), grease, transmission fluid, diesel fuel, power steering fluid, paint, gasoline, fluorescent bulbs, lead acid batteries and brake fluid.

Also, properly rinsed pesticide containers will be accepted, but those with large quantities of pesticide containers should contact U.S. AgRecycling (800-654-3145) to arrange free pickup.

Collection sites cannot accept tires; radioactive materials; explosives; household materials; compressed gas cylinders; herbicides containing 2,4, 5-T or 2, 4, 5-TP (Silvex, unless quantities are less than 5 gallons); pesticides or wood preservatives containing pentachlorophenol (unless quantities are less than 5 gallons); nutrient materials that are neither hazardous nor contain pesticide admixtures.
