Hessian fly, biofuels highlight annual ag tech conference

Hessian fly infestations caused significant economic damage to many Northeast Texas wheat producers in 2007, leaving many scratching their heads and wondering why a pest they had not seen in more than two decades suddenly showed up in what promised to be a bumper wheat crop.
Learning how to manage the pest will be part of the annual Ag Technology Conference December 13 at the Texas A&M University-Commerce campus.
Chris Sansone, Texas Extension integrated pest management specialist, will discuss management techniques for Hessian fly and other insects of winter wheat.
Bill McCutchen, Deputy Associate Director, Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, will update growers on development of dedicated bioenergy crops.
Other topics include pasture and rangeland management and controlling annual ryegrass in row crops and winter wheat.
Participants also will hear updates on laws and regulations and how they affect their pocketbooks.
The annual event gets underway with registration and exhibit visits from 8 until 10 in the Sam Rayburn Memorial Student Center.
Participants may earn 5 continuing education units (private applicators, commercial applicators, non-commercial applicators and certified crop advisors).
The Cereal Crops Research Incorporated and the Texas Cooperative Extension Service host the annual event.
Registration fee until November 30 is $20.00 per person, and lunch is included. The late registration fee will be $30.00. Make checks payable to C.C.R.I. and send to:
