Field Crop Symposium to focus on new ag research

Texas Cooperative Extension will sponsor the Coastal Bend Field Crop Symposium on Thursday, January 3, 2008 at the Texas A&M Research & Extension Center in Corpus Christi located on Hwy. 44, just west of the Airport. The Symposium will begin with registration at 8:30 a.m. followed by speaker presentations at 8:45 a.m.

The morning sessions will include; Cotton Research Updates by Dr. Roy Parker, Extension Entomologist, an Overview of Emerging Crop Diseases and Management Implications by Dr. Gary Odvody, Associate Professor, Texas Ag Experiment Station, an Update on Pesticide Laws and Regulations by Dr. Mark Matocha, Extension Progam Specialist, and Dr. Dan Fromme, Extension Agronomist will discuss Best Management Practices to Reduce Herbicide Resistant Weeds. The Potential of Bio-Energy Production in the Coastal Bend will be reviewed by Dr. Juerg Blumenthal, Extension Agronomist.

Following a break for lunch, the afternoon session will resume at 1:30 p.m. Topics and speakers will include; Cotton Technology Update by Dr. Robert Lemon, Extension Cotton Specialist, Crop Research Update by Dr. Carlos Fernandez, Associate Professor, Texas Ag Experiment Station, Insect Control in Stored Grain and Storage in Poly Bags by Dr. Roy Parker, a Farm Bill Update and Market Outlook by Dr. Larry Falconer, Extension Economist and the Components of the Farm ASSIST Program by Mac Young, Extension Program Specialist. The symposium will adjourn by 4:00 p.m.

Pesticide Applicators and Certified Crop Advisors will be awarded up to 5 CEU’s for participation in this symposium. For more information contact Jeff Stapper at the Nueces County Extension Office at 767-5224.
