Sen. Cornyn appointed to Senate Agriculture Committee

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, today issued the following statement announcing his appointment to the Senate Agriculture Committee. In addition to his new seat on the Senate Agriculture Committee, Sen. Cornyn will continue to serve on the Senate Finance, Budget and Judiciary Committees.
"From the cowboys on the Chisholm trail in the late 1800s to the success of today's cotton farmers-agriculture has always been at the heart of Texas' economy and our farmers and ranchers play a vital role in our state's economy. I look forward to serving on the Senate Agriculture Committee to advance Texas' priorities and ensure our state's agriculture industry continues to thrive.
"With Texas facing a severe drought that is threatening the livelihood of so many farmers and ranchers in our state, I will use my seat on the Committee to continue pushing for immediate relief that will help our state recover from the enormous losses associated with the drought. The Senate Agriculture Committee will also play a key role in a number of important issues during this session of Congress including modernizing commodity futures regulations, ensuring that nutritious meal options are available to schoolchildren, and scrutinizing the economic impact of President Obama's cap-and-trade proposal. It is clear that cap-and-trade would be devastating to Texas energy producers, and as more details are revealed, our farmers and ranchers are growing concerned that they will be significantly impacted by higher energy and farm input costs. I will work to ensure that this dangerous cap-and-trade bill is not passed by the Senate."
