Corn, grain sorghum and alfalfa producers have a number of new options available for 2003 planting, offering increased yield potential, disease, insect and herbicide resistance and other quality and yield characteristics.
Brief descriptions of some of the new varieties and hybrids are presented below. Others will be featured in subsequent issues of Southwest Farm Press.
NC+ Hybrids, Conventional
NC+ 4822: 112 days, breakthrough conventional hybrid with outstanding yield potential, improved gray leaf spot tolerance, stay-green, and fall health versus NC+ 4880.
YieldGard Corn Borer Corn
NC+ 6362B: 117 days, corn borer resistant version of NC+ 6359 with higher yield potential, compact plant style with a top rating for tolerance to drought stress.
Roundup Ready Corn
NC+ 4882R: 112 days, Roundup Ready version of proven performer and customer favorite NC+ 4880, works well in 108 to 110 day areas.
NC+ 6962R: 118 days, improved version of NC+ 6960R with higher yield potential, outstanding heat/drought tolerance for the southern Corn Belt.
Roundup Ready/YieldGard Corn Borer, Stacked-Gene Corn
NC+ 3722RB: 107 days, stacked-trait version of NC+ 3709, NC+ 3701R and NC+ 3721B, works well in southern high heat environments, excellent for “early corn planted early” in the 110-day and later maturity zones.
NC+ 4992RB: 112 days, stacked-trait version of NC+ 4880, NC+ 4990B and NC+ 4882R, works well in 108 to 110-day areas.
NC+ 5642W: 114 days, new high yielder with desirable food grade characteristics, improved stalk strength and standability over NC+ 5633W.
DeKalb has launched 18 new corn hybrids featuring innovative technologies and traits aimed to increase grower profitability. New DeKalb corn hybrids feature innovative technology such as YieldGard Corn Borer trait for insect protection and the Roundup Ready trait for weed control.
In addition, DeKalb hybrids designated as Residue Proven have been tested to produce high yields in reduced-tillage systems. Two of this year's new hybrids, DKC59-08 and DKC64-11 RR/YGCB, earned Residue Proven status.
DKC35-51 RR/YGCB: Excellent emergence and seedling growth, with good foliar disease resistance. This hybrid has very good late-season plant integrity and 85-day relative maturity (RM).
DKC42-95 RR/YGCB: This hybrid has 92-day RM with excellent emergence, seedling vigor, stalks and roots. It flowers early with very good test weight, and possesses high yield potential.
DKC47-10 RR/YGCB: Has a 97-day RM with exceptional yield for its maturity. This hybrid boasts excellent roots and stalks, with very good emergence, grain quality, test weight and drydown.
DKC48-84 YGCB: Exhibiting very good emergence and excellent seedling growth, this 98-day RM also has very good test weight and drydown. YieldGard Corn Borer resistance is another key feature of DKC48-84 YGCB.
DKC50-18 YGCB: This 100-day RM hybrid has been widely adapted across a broad range of environments and geographic areas. DKC50-18 YGCB has excellent root strength, combined with very good stalk strength, greensnap tolerance and defensive traits to provide consistent performance.
DKC51-43: This hybrid exhibits excellent emergence and roots, with very good seedling growth and stalk strength. With a 101-day RM, it is widely adapted and provides consistent performance.
DKC58-24 RR/YGCB: Featuring YieldGard Corn Borer and Roundup Ready protection, this 108-day RM hybrid exhibits excellent emergence and seedling growth, with very good stalk strength and greensnap tolerance. This hybrid showed high test weight grain.
DKC59-08: Residue Proven — tested to produce high yields in reduced-tillage systems. This 109-day RM hybrid is a widely adapted, consistent performer with very good foliar disease package and excellent grain quality.
DKC60-09 RR/YGCB: Widely adapted in the central and eastern Corn Belt with 110-day RM. This hybrid has excellent emergence and seedling growth, with very good grain quality and test weight.
DKC60-19 RR/YGCB: A consistent performer for high yield environments, this hybrid has very good seedling growth and emergence, and a 110-day RM. Early flowering for maturity and very good ear flex are key features.
DKC62-15: Good ear flex for adaptation to a range of plant populations and 112-day RM. This hybrid has excellent seedling growth, with very good emergence and foliar disease package.
DKC63-24 RR/YGCB: Excellent emergence and seedling growth, with very good drought tolerance and test weight. This 113-day RM hybrid has YieldGard Corn Borer and Roundup Ready protection.
DKC63-50 YGCB: YieldGard Corn Borer protection with excellent yield for maturity. This 113-day RM hybrid has very good stalk strength and drydown in the fall.
DKC64-01 YGCB: This hybrid has excellent grain quality and test weight, and very good emergence and seedling growth. It has a 114-day RM and very good staygreen.
DKC64-11 RR/YGCB: Residue Proven — tested to produce high yields in reduced-tillage systems. It has 114-day RM and consistent performance in tough environments with YieldGard Corn Borer and Roundup Ready protection.
DKC67-60 RR/YGCB: Has a 117-day RM. With Roundup Ready protection, this is a southern virus complex-tolerant hybrid. It shows excellent yield for maturity, excellent stalk and root strength, as well as excellent grain quality and test weight.
DKC69-71 RR/YGCB: Very good disease package for Southern corn producers. Has a 119-day RM, as well as YieldGard corn borer and Roundup Ready protection, with excellent yield for maturity.
DKC69-72 RR: Very good disease package for Southern corn producers with good top-end yield protection. This 119-day RM hybrid has excellent emergence, very good seedling growth and contains the Roundup Ready trait.
Brand new for 2003, Asgrow has introduced five new hybrids to enhance grower profitability. The newest Asgrow hybrids feature innovations such as Residue Proven for minimum tillage operations, Monsanto's YieldGard Corn Borer trait for season-long insect protection and the Roundup Ready trait for better weed control.
RX499 YG/CB: A 102-day relative-maturity (RM) hybrid with very good emergence and excellent seedling growth, RX499YG/CB gets off to a good start. With very good staygreen and excellent late-season-harvest appearance, it looks good in the field throughout the growing season.
This hybrid provides high yield potential with season-long YieldGard Corn Borer protection.
RX664: This 107-day RM hybrid is designated Residue Proven, meaning it is shown to produce high yields in reduced-tillage systems. Its excellent stalk strength, very good roots and disease package make RX664 a consistent performer over a wide range of growing conditions.
RX664 RR/YG: Similar to RX664, this Residue Proven hybrid uses YieldGard Corn Borer and Roundup Ready technologies to create a cost-effective program for unsurpassed weed control and season-long corn borer protection.
RX718 RR/YG: With excellent test weight, this 110-day RM hybrid has very good stalks, staygreen and intactness. With the added benefits of YieldGard Corn Borer protection and Roundup Ready technology, RX718 RR/YG provides a cost-efficient system for controlling weeds and pests.
RX772: This 113-day RM hybrid demonstrates excellent emergence for early planting and consistent yield across soil types and management practices. RX772 exhibits very good root strength and excellent stalk strength, as well as very good resistance to Gray leaf spot and Southern leaf blight.
Sorghum growers have new options available for them next season.
DeKalb is introducing four new sorghum hybrids in early- to medium-maturity groups for the 2003 growing season.
DKS29-28: This early-maturity hybrid is a shorter plant type with excellent panicle exsertion for an easier harvest. It flowers early and has very good drought tolerance. Increase populations when using in double-crop situations.
DKS36-00: This Residue Proven hybrid offers excellent yield potential in the medium- to early-maturity group and is adaptable. This hybrid also offers superior lodging resistance and resistance to Biotype I greenbug.
DKS42-20: This hybrid is adapted for dryland or irrigation and offers outstanding yield in the medium-maturity group. It produces a bronze-colored grain with an excellent test weight. This hybrid also has good panicle exsertion for an easier harvest.
DKS44-41: This high-yielding hybrid is in the medium-maturity group and adapted for dryland or irrigation. This hybrid produces a yellow grain. It offers superior lodging resistance and good staygreen.
Asgrow introduces three new sorghum hybrids for sorghum growers next season.
Orbit: This medium-maturity, food-grade hybrid produces a cream-colored grain. It offers seedling vigor, good drought stress standability and excellent panicle exsertion. This hybrid has excellent yield potential for its maturity.
Pulsar: This food-grade hybrid, which is resistant to Biotype I greenbug, is a medium to early maturity and has excellent drought stress tolerance and seedling vigor.
Riley: This medium- to early-maturity hybrid offers outstanding seedling vigor and panicle exsertion. It has a short plant height and excellent standability.
NC+ 6R32: Red, 63 days, an upgrade to NC+ 6R30 with improved test weight, smut resistance and yield; strong stalks hold together under extreme post-flowering stress.
NC+ 7Y32-K: Yellow, 68 days, only tan plant hybrid with genetic resistance to all known greenbug biotypes; grain is well adapted to all sorghum-use applications.
NC+ 7C22: Cream, 69 days, new generation of sorghum genetics with outstanding pre-flowering stress tolerance; strong adaptation to western dryland environments.
NC+ 7W92: White, 75 days, the first true white/tan food grade hybrid from NC+, outstanding yields, grain is NGSPA food grade certified. It is well-adapted to all sorghum-use applications.
NC+ NUTRI-TON II: Fertile forage hybrid, 80-90 days to bloom, 110-120 days to harvest, improved version of original NUTRI-TON; consistently high yields of grain-rich ensilage, moderately tall (eight foot to 12 foot) with high leaf-to-stalk ratio.
