County Extension Agents report weekly on estimated acres planted and on soil moisture conditions. The latest reports for counties reporting in Extension District 2 put the rate of planting at as high as 60 percent in Gaines County and as low as zero in Cochran County.
Here are the planting estimates for District 2 counties as of May 9:
Castro, 25 percent; Floyd, 35 percent; Hale, 40; Parmer, 35; Swisher, 5; Bailey, 25; Cochran, 0; Crosby, 7; Dawson, 10; Gaines, 60; Hockley, 15; Lamb, 40; Lubbock, 3; Lynn, 1; Terry, 12; Yoakum, 2; Borden, 10; Garza, 5.
The Texas Boll Weevil Eradication Foundation maps cotton acreage in each zone as fields are planted. Their latest report as of the week ending May 11 shows the following for the five High Plains eradication zones:
Northern High Plains, 142,351 acres; Northwest Plains, 71,801; Permian Basin, 34,422; Southern High Plains, 117,406; and Western High Plains, 78,474. Roger Haldenby is editor of the Plains Cotton Growers Association weekly newsletter.
