R-CALF USA’s charitable foundation, the United Stockgrowers of America Foundation for Research, Education and Endowment (USA FREE), is now accepting applications from students interested in winning one of three scholarships to be awarded in February 2008, at R-CALF USA’s annual convention in Omaha, Neb.

To qualify, applicants are required to write a research paper about a current threat to the U.S. cattle industry and include a solution. First place winner will receive a $2,000 scholarship, second place winner will receive a $1,500 scholarship and third place winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

Applications must be postmarked on or before Monday, Dec. 31, 2007. Applications are available at www.r-calfusa.com, under the “USA FREE” link, or by calling the national office at 406-252-2516. Applications must be completed in full, with the required supporting materials included, for consideration.

Applications will be accepted from graduating high school seniors and students currently attending an eligible post-secondary institution. Scholarship awards will be applied to 2008 spring or fall academic semesters only. The applicant or an immediate family member must be an R-CALF USA member in good standing at the time of submission. All interested applicants are encouraged to apply.

Last year’s scholarship recipients included: Kari Gillespie, daughter of Wayne and Roxy Gillespie, of Kevin, Mont.; Kerry Lewis, daughter of Kimmi Lewis and the late Dave Lewis, of LaJunta, Colo.; Tyler Sandru, son of Rick and Jody Sandru, of Twin Bridges, Mont. and Nicole Steffes, daughter of Darrell and Jeanette Steffes, of Vale, S.D. These four recipients were selected by an independent panel of judges from a total of 59 applicants.

The scholarships are funded through private tax-deductible donations and the sale of artwork commissioned specifically for the program. An original painting by artist Virgil Stephens titled “A Woman’s Touch” was introduced during R-CALF USA’s 2007 annual convention to help fund this effort. A limited number of 24” x 24” prints are available for $150 each, with 75 percent of the proceeds to benefit R-CALF USA’s OTM (over 30 month) Rule litigation fund and 25 percent of proceeds to benefit the R-CALF USA Scholarship Foundation.

Stephens’ prints also are available for members to use if they wish to have a roll-over auction fund-raiser in their area, with proceeds going toward R-CALF USA’s efforts to stop the OTM Rule. For more information, contact the national office.
