Tom Rotello, Chairman of the Texas Soybean Board and a farmer from Navasota, announced the date of their upcoming election for board members. The election will be held by mail on December 15, 2008. Three farmer directors will be elected – one from the High Plains (Andrews, Bailey, Briscoe, Castro, Cochran, Crosby, Dawson, Deaf Smith, Floyd, Gaines, Glasscock, Hockley, Howard, Lamb, Lubbock, Lynn, Martin, Midland, Parmer, Swisher, Terry, and Yoakum counties), one from the Gulf Coast (Austin, Brazoria, Calhoun, Chambers, Colorado, Ft. Bend, Galveston, Hardin, Harris, Jackson, Jefferson, Liberty, Matagorda, Orange, Waller, & Wharton counties) and one from NE Texas (Bowie, Delta, Fannin, Lamar, Red River, Grayson, Collin, Hunt, Hopkins, Franklin). The positions on the board are voluntary and must be held by producers. The Board meets two or three times a year at various locations in Texas. Travel, meals, and housing are provided at the meetings.
Anyone wishing to run for a position on the board should apply to TSB by October 31 by contacting the office (1-800-247-8691 or email@example.com). A nomination form with 10 producer signatures is required.
The Texas Soybean Board is responsible for the allocation of the state portion of the National Soybean Checkoff in the best interest of state producers. Half of all checkoff funds collected remain in Texas and are used to fund research and promotion to the benefit of Texas soybean producers. The remainder of the funds are sent to the United Soybean Board and pooled with collections from across the country. These funds are used nationally and internationally for promotion, research (new uses of soybeans and production), maintenance of global markets etc. The state is divided into four districts with board members being elected on a rotating basis every two years for terms of six years. Current officers are Tom Rotello, Navasota, Chairman; Richard Raun, El Campo, Vice- Chairman; and Wade Cowan, Brownfield, Secretary/Treasurer. Rotello also represents Texas on the United Soybean Board. Other Board Members are Daniel Berglund, Wharton; Gaylord Cogburn, Happy; John Giesenschlag, Caldwell; Worth Matteson III, DeKalb; Mike Skinner, Spearman and Carl Weets, Cooper.
