Concentrating on single countries, may obscure some other large successes, most notably U.S. wheat sales in the Western Hemisphere, U.S, Wheat Associates say.

So far this year, sales in Latin America are at 6.2 million metric tons compared to 5.3 million tons at the same time last year.

While Mexico accounts for the biggest share of those sales, excellent results also are in Brazil (five times as much as last year), Colombia (up 44 percent), and Venezuela (up 46 percent). Chilean sales are triple over last year, 133,000 metric tons compared to only 33,600 tons last year. Those last four countries alone account for commercial sales of 2.1 million metric tons, which adds nearly a million tons more in sales than last year.

Other Western Hemisphere countries registering increased commercial sales are Belize, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Guyana, Nicaragua, Panama, and Trinidad-Tobago.

U.S. Wheat Associates has four experts devoted to developing the Latin American markets.
