Eradication board sets assessment dates, rates

Assessments for 2002 were recently approved by the Texas Boll Weevil Eradication Foundation board of directors when they met in Abilene.

According to the board's decision, assessments in 2002 for the five zones falling within the Plains Cotton Growers Association's 25 county area will be uniform, both in amount and timing. Dryland cotton producers will be assessed at $6 per acre and irrigated cotton producers at $12 per acre as authorized by referendum at the initiation of each zone's program.

Due dates for payment were also approved uniformly for the five zones.

For each zone the final date for certification of the 2002 cotton crop through USDA Farm Service Agency is July 15.

TBWEF officials at the meeting said they should receive this certification information by early August allowing bills to be mailed around Aug. 12.

The board approved a 2 percent discount for any 2002 assessment account settled before Sept. 10, and set Sept. 25 as the date for accounts in the five High Plains zones to be deemed due and payable.
