President Obama completed the final leg of a journey that has taken some five years to complete by signing the 2014 Agriculture Act on Friday, February 7, 2014.

The President signed the law on the campus of Michigan State University, alma mater of Sen. Debbie Stabenow, Senate Agriculture Committee Chair who led the effort to pass the farm bill in the Senate three times.

Farmers face decisions.

The farm bill debate has been long and often contentious as parties and diverse factions in the agriculture industry staked out positions that at times seemed intractable.

Most members of the farm community would agree the new farm bill is not everything they wanted, but most were relieved to be putting the nearly four years of often bitter debate on everything from the dairy safety net to food stamp cuts behind them.
